Happy Holidays!

As 2009 comes to a close, we thought we’d take a quick look back on some of the highlights. We had great year full of new challenges, laughter, accomplishments, and a few setbacks. We have nothing but incredible optimism for 2010 and the years to come. Here are a few highlights from this year.

The first five months of the year Gabriel was helping Papa train for the PCT 50 mile train run. The two trained all over San Diego County as Zac was staying home with Gabriel. The two had a blast together and Zac managed to finish his first 50 mile race in one piece and with a big smile. Gabriel and Tracy were a big component to his success. Next on the list is the Lake Sonoma 50 mile race and in June he will step up and do the San Diego 100 mile trail race.

In June, we went down to our place in Bahia Asuncion for three weeks. We installed a new patio, tile, and planted a number of shade and fruit trees. We also enjoyed plenty of beach time with Gabriel. He is a natural in the water and at the beach. During our trip, we learned that Tracy had been accepted into an all-expenses/tuition program at Pt. Loma Nazarene University that would transition her to become a credentialed Special Education teacher. With the return to school, also came a job transfer to Bell Middle School where she is teaching Special Education. She has not been this happy in a long time.

Zac also started working at a new school. Actually, he started his student teaching at Eastlake Middle School in late July and finished this week. He taught 7th grade math and 8th grade Algebra. His next step is to get a full time teaching job in spring while he finishes up his Masters in Multicultural Education.

With Zac back at work, Gabriel started school as well. We found a wonderful in-home day care center nearby. Gabriel is thriving there and we are so relieved that he is in good hands. He continues to amaze us and challenge us. As most of you already know, Gabriel is going to be a big brother come June. Yes, we are pregnant. We will find out whether we are having a boy or girl in early January.

We will be spending Christmas and New Years at our place in Bahia Asuncion, Baja California Sur. We look forward to eating lots of lobster and fish, laughing with friends and family, and taking some quality naps. Hope you have something fun planned as well.

 Sorry for the suspense!  The power went out yesterday around 1:30 pm just as the main brunt of the storm was subsiding.  We decided to take a drive around town and see the. damage. As I thought, we were spared major damage although we had sustained winds of at least 50 mph and hard, steady rain.  We lost some of the lamina (tin) roof on the chicken coop and a few plants were blown silly but otherwise we were spared.  We did lose a phone pole on our property, too. Last night was one my favorite in a long time.  The kids played charades in candle light while I tried to sing kareoke from my phone.  We laughed so hard.  It was a very fun evening. We spent most of the day drying out, putting things away, and pulling weeds.  The chickens are super happy, the dogs and cat are good, and the garden is super happy now. Hurricane Kay 8am Update

 The storm is starting to kick up a bit.  Everyone slept well and is ready for what's to come.  We have a few minor leaks in the house but we are prepared.  The rain is starting to come down and I think is supposed to last until tomorrow.  The brunt of the strom should start around 9 and last until mid afternoon. I walked out to check on our rooster, hen, and baby chicks.  Our rooster, Reyna, was drenched and not happy.  It appears he was stubborn and slept on his perch.  I put come cinder blocks on the tin roof of the coop and made some more shelter inside.  They will survive but they don't too happy. The light just flickered a bit so I hope our electricity stays on.  If so, I'll post again in a few hours.

Hurricane Kay 10:40 am Update

 The wind is still blowing hard out of the east.  I am sensing we won't get hit as bad as expected.  But with that said, the brunt of the storm is coming.  I know there will be extensive damage around town and to the roads.  From what I can see from our place, the erosion of the roads is not too bad yet but the bulk of the rain is still to come. We have moderate leaking in our house but not too bad.  Having Starlink has been great.  The kids are watching videos and building Lego while Tracy is busy creating lesson plans.  As long as the power stays on, we are in good shape. I wanted to point out a few things that have really helped us weather this storm.  First off, I created a few makeshift rain gutters.  I did this to collect water from fog and drizzle.  But it's really helped us out as I empty the rain collection containers and this has minimized water building up from saturation.
